What is Functional
It's not just a buzzword. It's so much more, and it can help you.
Our body is a dynamic system. One that is interconnected through the biochemistry of hormones, neurotransmitters, enzymes, and biochemical reactions that are constantly taking place and having a direct effect on one another. Every biochemical reaction in our body requires an adequate amount of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals to run. In fact, what we eat influences immune regulation, the production of hormones and neurotransmitters, regulation of blood sugar and cholesterol, bone strength, muscular tone, skin health (beauty from the inside out!), brain function, microbiome health, overall weight, the inflammatory response in our bodies, and so much more!
Without proper nutrition, these reactions cannot take place, and ultimately, can lead to a number of biochemical imbalances in the body. This is the starting point of disease.
But this trend can be reversed. By using the principles of functional nutrition, we can rebuild health by first restoring proper biochemical function in the body. This can be achieved through a combination of therapeutic dietary interventions, nutritional supplementation, and sustainable lifestyle changes.
Food is not just calories, food is information, and food is the basic building block upon which our bodies operate.
Functional nutrition addresses the underlying biochemical imbalances that arise due to poor diet, food sensitivities, lack of essential nutrients, infection (hello, gut dysbiosis!), stress, toxin exposure, environmental allergens, emotional distress, sedentary lifestyle, and genetic polymorphisms (also known as gene SNPs or variation). In fact, all of these are root causes of some of the most common chronic health conditions today.
Once we determine which biochemical processes are affected, we can begin to understand why you are experiencing certain symptoms. A functional nutrition assessment may find that one condition has several different root causes, or inversely, that one biochemical imbalance may result in several different conditions.
Slowly, we can begin to correct your imbalances through a personalized nutritional and lifestyle plan. These interventions allow for your body’s physiological state to rebalance and return to homeostasis.
Through a functional nutrition paradigm, hormonal imbalances can resolve, energy levels can dramatically increase, blood sugar can normalize, digestive issues can diminish, sleep quality can improve, stubborn weight can fall off, and so much more.
It wasn't until my own health struggles that I discovered the immense healing power of functional nutrition. I now believe that food can be the single most powerful clinical intervention in chronic disease.
Today, I'm dedicated to educating women about a functional nutrition approach to health. Let’s work together to create a personalized plan that is tailored to your lifestyle preferences, health history, and unique biochemistry, and ultimately, a plan that is designed to help you achieve optimal health.
Let’s get started on your journey to wellness, together!
